Folks –

Today, I am calling on Senator John Kennedy to work with his colleagues in the Senate to pass legislation that requires background checks on all firearm sales.

Background checks will not stop every shooting death, but they will save lives. Moreover, 90% of Americans support this measure. Background checks are a good start, and the time to act is now.

Nineteen innocent young children and two teachers were killed on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas.

On May 14th, 10 African-Americans were murdered by a white supremacist while grocery shopping in Buffalo.

Two weeks earlier, a 13-year-old girl in Shreveport was slain in her home by a bullet that strayed from a rolling shootout in her neighborhood.

Violent crime is spiking across our state. According to data recently released, guns were the leading cause of death for children and teens in 2020. The gun violence in this country is unacceptable.

I am a parent. I love my two children more than anything. I cannot imagine the pain and heartache parents bear when their child’s life is cut short by senseless violence.

We all feel sick, sad, and angry about the recent mass shootings and the spike in violent crime. But John Kennedy is a sitting United States Senator. He has a position of authority and can do more than talk and offer condolences. Senator Kennedy can act.

That’s why I am calling on Kennedy to pass legislation that makes our communities safer and protects our children by requiring background checks on all firearm sales. If he is unwilling to act in the face of hate crimes, school shootings, and rising murder rates, he is unworthy of the office he holds.
