Former Mayor and Council Chair
Current Ward 7 Councilmember
Vincent C. Gray
Endorses Faith Gibson Hubbard
Ward 5 Neighbors and Friends,
I enthusiastically endorse Faith Gibson Hubbard to be the next Councilmember for Ward 5! Faith will be ready on day one. Her knowledge of government, strong work ethic, intelligence, integrity and deep commitment to uplifting District residents will be a great asset on the Council. We face many challenges and Faith's abilities are exactly what the Council needs.
Many people know that I’ve worked in non-profit social services, as a DC government agency lead, and served as a Council member, Council chair, and as the 7th elected Mayor of the District of Columbia. So, I know when a candidate has what it takes and when they are genuinely interested in serving their community. That's why I know Faith Gibson Hubbard is the right choice for the Ward 5 Council seat.
I first met Faith when I was Chair of the Council and got to know her better during my tenure as Mayor. Faith’s commitment to her community was evident when she was advocating for improving our schools as president of Ward Five Council on Education. I appointed Faith to the Student Assignment and School Boundary Review Advisory Committee; the committee was tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of DC Public Schools’ boundaries and student assignment process, which had not been updated in 40 years. During that process, Faith pushed for guaranteed access to Pre-K slots for children at their in-boundary schools to encourage families to take a look at their neighborhood school. This recommendation resulted in DCPS creating the Early Action Pre-Kindergarten program, which provides guaranteed access for in-boundary students applying to pre-kindergarten at participating schools. Faith's vision and forward thinking was a major benefit for Ward 5 families and everyone across the District.
Later, when we needed a Ward 5 representative on the Library Board of Trustees of the DC Public Library, I didn't hesitate to appoint Faith. She vigorously advocated for funding the renovation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, modernized facilities for the Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library, and Woodridge Neighborhood Library; all of which are valued, essential community assets.
Faith and I share a passion for early childhood and K-12 education. Her work on maternal and infant health and early childhood development as the first Executive Director of Thrive by Five was impressive and benefited many families. I know that Faith has plans to address a wide range of community issues, but I am especially eager to see her deliver real results for children and families.
Please join with me in supporting Faith's candidacy. Let's elect the first woman to represent Ward 5 on the Council of the District of Columbia. We have so much to accomplish and Faith is ready to get to work.
