Public transportation is an investment in people, communities, the economy and the environment. In our new report, Alabama Arise explains how state support for public transportation would expand economic opportunity, advance racial equity and build an Alabama where everyone can stay connected.

Many older adults, individuals with disabilities and people with low incomes need public transit to get to work, seek medical care, buy groceries and more. Lawmakers can help ensure these freedoms for everyone in Alabama by allocating $20 million of the state’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money to the state Public Transportation Trust Fund.

Arise's report shows how that funding would strengthen public transportation across our state. We surveyed public transportation systems in 42 of Alabama's 67 counties this spring, and the findings were clear: State funding and the resulting additional federal dollars would empower those systems to lift many service barriers.

New funding would allow systems to hire more drivers, add more routes, extend operating hours and modernize technology. And it would move Alabama closer to the vision that one transit director shared with us: "for everyone to have access to safe, reliable and timely transportation with no limits as to when or to where."
