Yesterday evening, progressive champion Jessica Cisneros officially conceded in her fiercely-fought race in Texas’ 28th congressional district primary.
Jessica — a young, bold, progressive woman of color — ran an incredible campaign against Henry Cuellar, an anti-abortion, anti-union, and pro-NRA corporate Democrat. She lost by a margin of just 289 votes after a recount.
Jessica not only had to fight back against a flood of right-wing super PAC spending, she also had to take on the entire establishment in Democratic Party leadership — led by our opponent, Sean Patrick Maloney.
That’s right.
When it became clear Jessica could win, Sean Patrick Maloney wasted no time giving his whole-hearted support to the last anti-choice Democrat in the House of Representatives.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said it best: This was an utter failure of leadership.
Voices like Jessica’s are the future of our movement, and with a margin so razor-thin, there’s no doubt that the establishment's 11th-hour smear campaign made the difference in this race.
Our campaign is taking this result as a confirmation of what we already know: Sean Patrick Maloney will do and spend whatever it takes to keep corporate incumbents in office, and stop young progressive leaders like Jessica and Alessandra from winning.
That’s why we have to ask, especially today:
Thank you for all that you do,
