Dear John, Happy 4th of July! I want to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of today — Independence Day. Over 200 years ago, as Lincoln put it, “our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” |
Those values are still the values we strive to live up to today. And in recent times, our freedoms and liberties have come under attack. But we must fight to keep America the free and equal nation our founders once fought for.
America is special because of our values. My parents recognized that when they fled Communist Cuba to live the promise of America. And immigrants from all across the world — many of whom live right here in Miami — recognize that same promise of America too.
So today, I hope we can all take a moment to be grateful for the country we live in and recommit ourselves to fighting for the core principles that make our country unique. Thank you, and I hope you have a happy 4th of July with your loved ones. — Janelle |
