Chinoise clung tightly to her mother ( [link removed] ), so young she hadn’t taken her first steps, her hands and feet still soft and pink. Just a few weeks old and surrounded by her loving family. Until, one day, when professional poachers came storming into her forest home, utterly ruthless and armed with automatic rifles.
One by one, the cold-blooded hunters shot dead the chimpanzee community. The entire clan was massacred in Cameroon, Central Africa, then butchered for their meat.
But, Chinoise was worth more alive. The petrified baby was prised from her dead mother’s arms, shoved in a sack and sold as a pet.

The devastated, fragile, baby chimp was bought by a Chinese restaurant owner to attract customers, who paid to have photos taken with her. She was given alcohol to keep her quiet. It's unbearable to think of her anguish… In the wild, infant chimps rarely leave their mother’s side. 90% of bushmeat orphans – traumatised and malnourished – die in their first few weeks after capture.
But there are glimmers of light. Born Free’s new Guardians of Dja ( [link removed] ) project is working with local people in Cameroon to protect wild apes in their forest homes, and you can help.
Thankfully, Chinoise was rescued, and now has a new family of rescued chimpanzees at the wonderful Limbe Wildlife Centre, a sanctuary in Cameroon.

But, we can’t do this life-saving work alone. The challenges are daunting, but we never forget that every ape saved is a precious individual. For example, do you remember Simao the little orphan chimpanzee (also known as Simon)?
With your help, he was rescued from the ape trade in Guinea Bissau, and has just arrived safely with our Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection friends in Liberia for rehabilitation.
