Friend,

Governor Doug Ducey recently vetoed the extension of Proposition 400 which has provided funding for almost every major transportation project in metro Phoenix, including Loops 101, 202 and 303. He chose to veto the largest jobs bill that has come across his desk in his nearly 8 years in office.

Governor Ducey is clearly out of touch and doesn’t trust the people of Arizona. This tax was already approved by voters in both 1985 and 2004 and has helped many of our neighboring cities improve their transit systems, greatly benefiting the Valley's larger system.

Governor Ducey has now effectively cut funding for:

More than 350 new freeway and highway lane miles, including 186 new HOV lane miles.

1,300 new or improved miles of arterial road lanes.

About 12 miles of new light rail, 37 miles of bus rapid transit and 7 miles of new streetcar.

Elected officials, tribal leaders, nonprofit and business groups worked for years to create the plan for 400 Extension. This plan was approved unanimously by a bipartisan group of mayors that make up Maricopa County, then passed by both the House and Senate with strong bipartisan support in both chambers.

The voters of Maricopa County would have had the chance to vote on whether we want to continue investing in our transportation system, but Governor Ducey's veto puts a huge roadblock in our way.

I served as chair of the Transportation Policy Committee when we unanimously passed our regional transportation plan. Until the governor’s veto, this was a model of how well government leaders could work together.

Our bipartisan leaders are not stopping here and will work to find a solution to Governor Ducey’s mistake. The residents of our region demand and deserve it.

Thank you,
