Tentative deal reached at Politics & Prose
Workers at Politics & Prose have reached a tentative agreement with management, UFCW Local 400 reported on Tuesday. “Next up is presenting the tentative agreement to the rest of the membership for a vote,” tweeted the union. “Everything is on track for this to be the first union contract at the first unionized bookstore in DC!”

Labor agreement reached on Maryland’s Purple Line construction
The contractor hired to complete Maryland’s Purple Line construction has reached an agreement with a major labor union, ending months of negotiations over guaranteed wages and benefits, project officials said. Major work on the 16-mile rail line resumed this month. With the new labor agreement in place, more will resume after Labor Day and “should really start to take off” in October, said Steve Lanning, Local 11 business manager for Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). More than 50 construction workers protested the project in May, saying the new contractor had backed off a commitment to provide agreed-upon wages and benefits. Lanning said the agreement’s “very enticing” wages and benefits will attract the best workers and “make sure it’s done on time and on budget.”

Shoppers workers protests continue
Shoppers workers – members of UFCW 400 – staged their latest weekly protest on Wednesday, demanding a fair contract at the Shoppers in Germantown. “UNFI better wise up!” said Local 400. UNFI owns Shoppers.

Twenty-five workers die, unable to escape a fire at the Imperial Poultry processing plant in Hamlet, NC. Managers had locked fire doors to prevent the theft of chicken nuggets. The plant had operated for 11 years without a single safety inspection – 1991

September 4
What many believe was to become the longest strike in U.S. history, 600 Teamster-represented workers walk out at the Diamond Walnut processing plant in Stockton, Calif., after the company refused to restore a 30 percent pay cut they had earlier taken to help out the company. The two sides ultimately agreed to a new contract after 14 years - 1991
