AFGE urges action to avoid a government shutdown

On behalf of more than 700,000 federal and D.C. government employees nationwide and overseas, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is urging Congress to avert a government shutdown by passing a continuing resolution that keeps the government operating after the fiscal year ends this Friday, Sept. 30. [link removed] Click here to tell Congress to support a continuing resolution and pass a full-year budget. "Government shutdowns have a negative impact on federal employees, who are either forced to work without a paycheck for the duration of the funding lapse or are locked out of their jobs altogether," AFGE Deputy Director of Legislation Daniel Horowitz wrote in a letter to all members of the U.S. House and Senate. Such shutdowns also hurt the economy and citizens who rely upon the services, support, and protection these federal operations routinely provide, Horowitz added. Labor 2022: GOTV in Maryland

"When union voters vote for union candidates, we win," tweeted the Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO after Saturday's Maryland labor-to-labor walks. Participating unions included AFT Maryland, AFSCME Maryland, Painters DC 51, UMD Fearless Student Employees, UMD AAUP, and the Metro Baltimore Council AFL-CIO. Sociologist and photographer Lewis Hine is born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In 1908, Hine became the photographer for the National Child Labor Committee and spent the next decade documenting child labor to help the organization's lobbying efforts to end child labor in American industry. 1874

Graduate student employees at Temple University in Philadelphia win union recognition. The Temple University Graduate Students Association ratified its first contract in May 2002, significantly improving graduate employment in terms of healthcare and wages, and marking the first time that graduate students in the state bargained a contract with their employer. 2001
