WHY THIS ELECTION MATTERS
ISSUES: Education “When education is under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!” DC teachers and their supporters marched and rallied in Northwest Washington Tuesday morning, demanding a contract. “I think it's just appalling that teachers have gone three years without a contract,” said Power Ed Executive Director Scott Goldstein, a parent of two children in DC public schools and a former DCPS teacher himself. “We are in the city with the highest teacher turnover rate in the country,” Goldstein added, “and it's even getting worse in the past few years.” Marching and rallying with the teachers were allies, including At-Large DC City Council members Elissa Silverman and Robert White, along with Frazier O’Leary, member of the State Board of Education. “Teachers are a precious resource and deserve to be treated that way,” said White. “Our teachers need a fair contract now,” said Silverman. “They have been waiting three years for a pay increase, which is simply unreasonable. I'm asking the Mayor and her administration to make a fair offer and get this done."
