Reacting to Kroger/Albertsons merger announcement, UFCW 400 vows to protect members
“We will not let this deal pass by in silence,” promised UFCW Local 400 after Kroger and Albertsons announced plans on Friday to merge both companies to create one of the largest grocery chains in the country. “We will take all necessary actions to protect our members and their livelihoods during this corporate merger,” said Local 400, which represents workers at both supermarkets. The merger is not expected to close until 2024, and will be subject to intense scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission, which must approve of the merger under antitrust regulations. Noting that “This is not the first time we have been through something like this,” Local 400 said that when Ahold and Delhaize underwent a merger in 2016, “our union responded with a major community mobilization and successfully stopped the closure of eight Giant Food stores. When UNFI announced plans to close Shoppers stores, we mobilized an intense public outcry, and now the company has reversed course and is opening more Shoppers stores. We are committed to defending our members.” Read more here.

AFL-CIO hails DOL move on independent contractors
On Tuesday, the Biden administration once again delivered on its promise to put working people first. By restoring commonsense rules to determine who is an employee, and making it harder for employers to intentionally misclassify their employees as independent contractors, the Department of Labor’s (DOL’s) announcement will increase protections and expand benefits to so many working people who have been subjected to corporate work-arounds. This proposed rule will ensure DOL has the tools to protect employees against the current and escalating problem of misclassification. While this announcement is a major step forward, we know there is still so much more to do to make our economy more fair and equitable. The AFL-CIO and our allies will continue to push for legislation and regulations to give workers the rights we deserve.
