** Planned freeze on alcohol duty is reversed

A planned freeze on alcohol duty from February 2023, announced in September by former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, has been reversed. The new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt made clear the UK Government would not proceed with the freeze, which he claimed would save around £600m a year. The next steps of the Alcohol Duty Review announced in Growth Plan 2022 will continue as planned.

** Number of premises with alcohol licences increases

The number of premises with licences to sell alcohol in England and Wales has reached their highest level since comparable records began in 2008. According to statistics released by the Home Office, on 31 March 2022 there were 222,500 premises licences in England and Wales, compared to 195,800 in 2008. Meanwhile, the number of licences permitting the sale or supply of alcohol 24/7 increased 31% between March 2018 and March 2022.
