Friend --
Please join us this Sunday, 11/13 at 10AM!
We're looking for members to help shape the direction of our upcoming Tool Library project. Tool libraries, like other lending libraries, are prefigurative institutions: they demonstrate a way of distributing resources outside of capitalism, even as they expand our capabilities and help us to meet our needs while reducing our reliance on systems of exploitation and domination. Once established, our library will empower community members, reduce wasteful overproduction, and provide a nucleus of organization for people who don’t yet necessarily see things like manufacturing, consumption, and access to goods as “political” subjects.
The purpose of this initial planning meeting will be to determine what resources we need, identify those we have available, and assign roles to volunteers so that we can build the momentum we’ll need to establish at least one operational Tool Library in Ventura County.
Some examples of questions we’ll need to answer:
- Will the initial phase of our library have a centralized physical location, or will it be digital with the tools geographically distributed at volunteer’s homes?
- What will the requirements be for a community member to check out tools, and what rules will govern borrowing?
- What tools should we look to acquire? Should we limit our scope to certain categories of tools/appliances?
- Should we seek funding or other help from outside sources, or keep to a fully DIY approach?
The more voices and perspectives we can assemble, the better this project will be, so please consider attending this first meeting to get the ball rolling.
This meeting will be held on Sunday, November 13th at 10AM. We'd love to se you there!
