Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,
When you think about marketing, you likely think of Super Bowl commercials, creepily accurate Instagram ads, or TikTok influencers sharing their skincare routine.
But marketing is essential to the work that we do, too. We’re up against Big Oil and Big Plastic who spend millions of dollars on advertising and marketing to make sure plastic prevails. They marketed plastic pollution as an individual littering problem with the infamous ‘Crying Indian’ ad in the 1970s. They sold us on the recycling dream for decades, even knowing that the system would never work. They capitalized on a global pandemic by marketing single-use plastic as the safe option to protect you and your family.
You, as a member of the 5 Gyres community, probably see through a lot of this. But there’s no denying that it’s not always easy to know what’s real and fake news these days. And it’s a challenge for us to break through the digital clutter to get our scientific research in front of the masses. When there are endless TikToks about babies, puppies, and dreamy travel destinations, who wants to read about polyhydroxyalkanoates or polyfluoroalkyl substances?!
But plastic pollution is an existential threat, and it is our job as Honest Brokers to share this information in a truthful and thoughtful way.

And next year, we want to do even more. We need your support to make sure our research gets into the right hands. You deserve to know what’s sustainable and what’s greenwashing, businesses need to know which plastic alternatives are best for the planet, and policymakers must understand the complete landscape before passing a bill.

Virtually yours,
