Unions on Capitol Hill today to oppose Kroger/Albertsons merger
Six local UFCW unions – representing twelve states and the District of Columbia, and over 100,000 Kroger and Albertsons workers – will discuss the impact of the proposed merger between the two grocery giants on Capitol Hill today prior to this afternoon’s hearing by the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights. The unions say the merger will have a “devastating” effect on workers, consumers, and suppliers such as farmers and ranchers if approved by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and will call on federal and state regulators to stop the merger. The union event will be live-streamed starting at 11a this morning.

Meet The People: Tambra Jackson
“I wish that people knew how hard the employees work to maintain the gallery and to make sure they have a safe and clean place for them when they visit,” says Tambra Jackson. Jackson works at the National Gallery of Art, and is president of AFGE Local 1831. She’s been working for the federal government for eight years, first joining the rest of her family in the Smithsonian Institution and then transferring to the National Gallery of Art. She says the best part of her job is seeing children come to the gallery for visits.

CSA’s Holiday Family Basket Update: 8 families are waiting
With the holidays just weeks away, eight local families are still awaiting adoption in the Community Services Agency’s Holiday Family Basket program. Eight families have been selected by donors to receive holiday gifts, and another eight families are on the waiting list. Contributors thus far include the Bricklayers, DC Nurses Association, IUOE Local 77, IUOE Local 99. Washington DC Chapter National Epicureans Inc., Teamsters Local Union 639, IUPAT District Council 51, and Dan Duncan and family.
