Union leaders make Power 100 AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran and Maryland State Education Association President Cheryl Bost have made the Daily Record’s 2022-23 Power 100 list, which focuses on “the people who play an outsized role” in Maryland’s culture, lifestyle, civic conversation and economic fortunes.
Moran spent 10 years as AFSCME’s area organizing director and was named to his current role as president of Council 3 in 2012; an elementary classroom teacher in Baltimore County for more than 25 years, Bost is on leave to serve as president of MSEA, the state’s largest teachers union, a post she assumed in 2018. |
Congressional Workers Union warns of GOP rights grab
As the new Congress reconvened yesterday, word came that “incoming House Republican leaders are escalating union-busting tactics even before they have assumed power.” The Congressional Workers Union’s Saul Levin reports that “The resolution enshrining collective bargaining rights for House staffers that we passed last year is in their crosshairs”; its repeal was in the House Rules package that was on the agenda to be voted on after the swearing in of the 118th Congress. “This development confirms what we already know - House Republicans want to pick and choose who has labor rights to fit their agenda,” said Levin. “This move towards bosses determining their workers' rights would represent a major blow to our organizing efforts and the labor movement in general. All workers deserve a union, including us!” Levin urged statements and tweets of support on the CWU Twitter feed.
