Dear Neighbors,
For the first time in 100 years, the House of Representatives was unable to officially begin the next Congress for multiple days. The inability of House Republicans to govern is sad for Congress as an institution, our democracy, and the American people.
This week was a sharp contrast to the last two years when Democrats were in control and made unprecedented investments in infrastructure, passed gun safety legislation, brought manufacturing jobs back home, tackled the climate crisis, and reduced the cost of life-saving prescription drugs. I’m going to continue to fight to build on this progress and deliver for New Jersey.
Remembering January 6th
Two years ago, a deadly assault was waged on the U.S. Capitol, the Congress, and the Constitution. The insurrection was an attack on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. As we remember January 6th, I am grateful for the heroic officers who protected the Capitol. I joined my colleagues on the steps of the Capitol today to recognize their bravery and to honor the memory of those lost on January 6, including Officer Brian Sicknick, who was from Middlesex County. We also honored the more than 140 who were injured defending our democracy.
In a democracy, nobody is above the law, including the President of the United States. I support and commend the bipartisan work of the January 6th Select Committee. The Committee has put people over politics and consistently followed the facts, finding that President Trump and his closest associates engaged in insurrection against the United States and our Constitution. That’s why Democrats delivered the bipartisan Electoral Count Reform Act to stop a similar attempt to overturn a presidential election, in addition to providing additional funding for local election security.
Keeping Insulin Costs Low
Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare beneficiaries will pay no more than $35 per month on out-of-pocket insulin costs effective January 1. This means that millions of American seniors will no longer be vulnerable to outrageous insulin price hikes and won’t have to ration their insulin because they can’t afford it.
I’m glad that we were able to finally prioritize people over pharmaceutical company profits, and I’ll continue to fight to keep prescription drugs affordable for everyone.
