Team,
It’s hard to believe it, but it’s been just a little over a year since Michigan’s district lines were redrawn.
Seeing the final maps for the first time was a bittersweet moment for me. I was thrilled to continue to represent the people of mid-Michigan, but sad to lose parts of North Oakland County and so many folks who had been so vital to my previous campaigns. The district also doubled in size, added three new counties, became more rural, and lost many of the suburbs of Detroit.
I also knew what a tough fight we were in for. My race was the most competitive House race in the state, and one of the ten most competitive in the entire country. And it showed: we ended up having the single most expensive House race in America.
So how did we pull it off? We treated this race like I was running for mayor in 30 small towns at once. We were on the ground in places that hadn’t seen a Democratic candidate in decades. We may have been running in some brand new areas, but when you knock doors, listen, and put in the real work, it pays off. It’s really that simple.
We’ve definitely had a lot of unknowns thrown our way over the past year, and I’m sure there will be many more to come. Having resources is essential, so if you’d like to help us keep putting in the real work with folks across Michigan, I’d love it if you considered contributing below.
