Hi there, John, it's Tom again. A couple of weeks ago, I reached out asking you to share what issues are most on your mind heading into 2023.
I was blown away by how many responses we received. The stories and concerns you shared will be so valuable to my team and me as I determine our top legislative priorities in the months ahead. But first, I wanted to take a moment to talk about a concern that many of you brought up: the ever-rising cost of living.
I was proud to work with President Biden and my colleagues in the Senate to pass laws that helped lift some of the burden off of families – like the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act. But the simple truth is that some folks in Washington just don't want to do enough to address this urgent issue. And it's no secret why.
Democrats have been fighting for decades to lower the cost of medical care and housing, to provide support for families who need an extra hand, to strengthen the public education system, and to make the wealthiest Americans start paying their fair share. But at the same time, right-wing extremists bought and paid for by corporate megadonors have been working overtime to obstruct commonsense bills that would improve life for all of us.
And now, Kevin McCarthy has announced a plan to impose a 30% sales tax on all purchases and give his ultra-wealthy megadonors a free pass to cheat their way out of paying their fair share.
No one in America should have to work two or even three jobs to support their families and send their kids to school. It just isn't right.
We need to do better, and I am committed to delivering results. You have my word that I will always champion legislation to make life more affordable. But with the GOP scheming to destroy progress at every turn, I need folks like you to join me in this fight. So please, if you're able, can you make a $5 donation to defend our Senate majority and elect leaders who will fight for families?

Thank you for your input and your partnership in this work.
Respectfully,
Tom
