Team -
Everyone knows Michigan’s auto workers are the best in the world. As such, I felt it’s only fitting they be represented at tonight’s State of the Union address — though maybe not for reasons you expect.
My guest tonight is Mike Huerta, President of United Auto Workers 602, from the Lansing area. Mike, and all of the other UAW-represented folks that work at GM assembly plants at Delta Township and Grand River, and at the many part supplier factories, are some of the best Michigan has to offer.
But in recent years, Mike and his colleagues have come to represent the face of supply chain issues — and that hasn’t been easy.
Over the last few years, supply chain problems – specifically the microchip shortage – have become a bit of an obsession for me and my teams.
We’ve seen auto plants across the country and in my district close, working on and off because they haven’t been able to get their hands on a 14-cent microchip. For a while, they’d work one week, be off the next, all dependent on whether they got another 100+ microchips to complete a car.
It’s something I hear about every time I’m home – people have literally broken out into chants of “CHIPS! CHIPS! CHIPS!” whenever the topic pops up at my events.
It’s why so many of us fought to get the CHIPS Act over the finish line last summer. It’s a bipartisan bill that provides incentives for companies to manufacture the microchips that power everything – from our cars, to our cell phones, to our dishwashers – right here in the U.S.
Mike in particular has been a vital partner through all of the ups and downs – and explaining what the supply chain problems mean in very human terms. This is why I felt there is no better person to join me for this year’s State of the Union. His leadership and advocacy have exemplified the real world impact of a complicated, often abstract, issue.
I’m hoping that tonight will give us a chance to discuss the benefits we are already seeing from the CHIPS Act — and how to ensure it’s implemented with the spirit with which the bill was passed. We’re at a pivotal moment in our history when the lion share of Americans get that we must bring some critical supply chains home to the US, and I’m looking forward to hearing from President Biden about how we can bring more economic opportunity to Michigan.
Make sure you tune in! Mike and I will be cheering when the topic turns to supply chains!
