John,
It is looking Democrats won’t take the House majority this coming term making the last week since election night even tougher, no doubt about it. And before we get into what it all means I want to say one thing: thank you. Thank you for your efforts, your time, and your energy. I can tell you with certainty: you made a difference.
Now, I’m not going to sugarcoat the results: there’s a lot we can learn from Tuesday night. Let’s dig in…
Lesson number one:
We’re winning on the issues.

Of the ten states that put abortion rights on the ballot, seven voted to guarantee abortion rights in their state constitutions.
Let’s take Missouri as an example. Missouri was the first state to ban abortion — even in cases of rape — after Roe fell in 2022. Last week, Missourians approved an amendment guaranteeing reproductive freedoms. Arizona voters, too, enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution, as did voters in Colorado, Nevada, Maryland, and Montana.
Lesson number two:
Women candidates are always fighting an uphill battle.
Women seeking elected office must out-raise, out-organize, and out-qualify their opponents to be successful. It’s a simple, unfortunate truth that was underscored on Tuesday.
It is also a sobering reminder as to why we need entities like A Woman’s Place to help keep women candidates competitive up and down the ballot.
We know things feel grim but we are even more emboldened to go into the next cycle with a renewed commitment to prove that a woman’s place IS in elected office at all levels.
We are as clear-eyed about the disadvantages our candidates face as we are committed to using A Woman’s Place’s resources and status to support even more women in the upcoming cycle. If you are ready to hit the ground running, here is where you can donate to our 2026 Cycle Fund. [[link removed]]
However, we know we all need some rest so we aren’t calling you to action right now but know it is coming and we hope you will be there to answer when we do.
In solidarity,
Mary Gay Scanlon
The contemporary political landscape is filled with progressive women who are running for elected office up and down the ballot, who possess a true vision of equality for this country's future. A Woman's Place seeks to support their efforts by providing financial resources to embrace this tongue-in-cheek idea of what a woman's place should be.
We help put women where they belong: positions of political leadership throughout all levels of government.
